Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture for Endometriosis

Did you know Acupuncture for Endometriosis is available? It is such a common condition in my clinic, I thought I would share a little insight into how Acupuncture for Endometriosis can help. First, I’ll start with a personal story.

About 5 years ago my housemate had told me she gets bad period pain from Endometriosis that would stop her from working and would even cause her to be frequently hospitalised. Of course I felt terrible for her but could not get my head around period pain being so severe, until I saw what she was going through.

I couldn’t believe this beautiful woman was going through such pain on a monthly basis, but frustratingly, being in only my second year of Acupuncture studies I was unable to treat her. However, I remember thinking there must be another way to help women suffering the effects of Endometriosis, other than heavy pain medications and surgery.

I researched Acupuncture for Endometriosis and discovered it has many great research results and even wrote one of my papers on it. It naturally became an area of interest for me in my clinic to help support these women and be a part of giving them a better way of life.

So, what is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a complex and debilitating gynaecological condition affecting approximately 176 million women worldwide1!

It is a chronic, oestrogen dependent disorder whereby functioning endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus, adhering to abnormal locations including the pelvic cavity, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and surrounding ligaments. Typical treatments include pain medications, hormonal therapy and surgery.

Common symptoms are dysmenorrhoea (painful periods) and infertility, however, it can present in various ways. It can impact the physical, emotional, social well-being of women and their capacity to work2.

Acupuncture for Endometriosis

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Acupuncture for Endmetriosis offers an alternative perspective on the understanding of this condition presenting a more holistic, less invasive and safer approach to treatment.

According to TCM principles, Endometriosis almost always involves blood stagnation in the uterus which is responsible for the significant pain. This can occur from several factors from diet to stress! The meridians (channels) that regulate the blood in the uterus become obstructed, causing blood to stagnate and symptoms such as menstrual pain, irregular periods and potentially affecting fertility.

How can Acupuncture help relieve symptoms of Endometriosis?

Acupuncture supports the body’s natural healing mechanisms and helps to balance the body. It can be used to help regulate the menstrual cycle, support the balancing of hormones and clear obstructions, allowing the blood to flow freely. This often decreases pain, supports fertility and improves quality of life. Chinese herbs may also be recommended in some cases to help support this process.

How often will I need to get Acupuncture?

Each patient is assessed individually and has a personal treatment plan made for them. Generally, weekly treatments are advised for at least 3 menstrual cycles.
