Meet Dr Amie Akehurst from Sakura Acupuncture Brisbane

Meet Your Therapist

Dr Amie Akehurst is a fully qualified Acupuncturist and registered Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, and has a special interest in women’s health conditions, fertility and pregnancy support.

Amie has undertaken further training in a form of Japanese acupuncture known as Kiiko Matsumoto style (KMS). You will likely find that this Japanese approach is more gentle and relaxing than a standard acupuncture session, perhaps because it involves:

  • more delicate techniques, such as gently palpating your body

  • the use of much finer needles, which are not inserted as deeply

  • a focus on the breath

Prior to becoming a TCM practitioner, Amie studied nursing and worked in a pharmaceutical dispensary. This means that you have the assurance of working with a practitioner with a strong background in  Western medicine, as well as alternative therapies.

Outside of working hours at Sakura Acupuncture Brisbane, you might find Amie at a yoga or pilates class, or cooking (and eating!) tasty, nutritious meals as part of her own personal quest for a balanced lifestyle.

Why Sakura Acupuncture Brisbane?

With a focus on gentle Japanese acupuncture, it seemed only natural to name our acupuncture clinic with a Japanese word.

Sakura means “cherry blossom”, but also “smile/laugh”, the universal symbol for happiness, which reflects our holistic approach to health and wellbeing. These delicate pink flowers appear in early spring and hint at the fruit to come – representing our focus on fertility, pregnancy and other aspects of women’s health.
